Conscious Denial: From Trump's Impeachment to World War III
US President Donald Trump would be laughing if he were to read the headlines of the Washington Post and AP News saying that "the aim of killing Iranian general was to stop a war." Knowing his expertise on the politics of war, Trump should be aware that sending a drone strike to kill Qasem Soleimari does not lead to any sort of peace, nor would he expect Iran to ignore measures for retaliation.
Soleimani serves as among Iran's top military figures. He was known for overseeing brutally-genius weaponry and tactics used effectively against US troops numbering to 196 between 2005 and 2011 says US Defense officials via TWP. In that period of time, the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran (which is Iran's most powerful political entity) was already festered with US intervention in terms of its politics, control over the economy, and military influence.
US History on the "Theatrics of War"
Based on The London Economic, the US has for so long been involved with "32 distinct and separate bombing campaigns in 24 different countries" during WWII. After that, TLE listed 36 more bombing campaigns and military operations from China (1945 - 46) to Iran (2020). Seymour Hersh, an American Investigative Journalist, defines this intervention as a stageplay in a sense that the US literally sets the scenarios whenever it is favorable.
Studying how the US asserted its presence in Asia and the Middle East through staging attacks and terrorist threats, the US uses its vastly over-funded military arsenal to attain influence over its preyed countries. It may come through the form of playing the role of a "hero." and the solutions it proposes always end up with neo-liberal policies such as setting up military presences, influence over parliament, and a share of the country's territory and agricultural resources.
Iran needs to be respected as among the countries that continuously assert its independence from foreign dominance. The US ignores this factor and instead arms its attacks with pure Islamophobia and greed over the Middle East's oil reserves.
The War serves the interests of Trump
News regarding the now-incumbent President Trump's impeachment went out as early as December 18, 220. US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi led the democratic majority in the House, and was expected to approve two articles for impeachment to Trump for grounds of abuse of office and obstruction of Congress.
The Republican-dominated Senate will open a trial by January 2020.
With these events it is needed to be declared that Trump's initiative of assassinating Soleimani has nothing to do with his interests for peace. In fact, the US Government's claim that the US Embassy in Baghdad was attacked by Iranian military forces is utterly false. The mentioned event was actually an Iraqi protest against US airstrikes in India and Syria last December 29, 2019 (The Mind Unleashed, 2020). This resulted to 25 people killed and more than 50 wounded.
If so, the US has no reason whatsoever to rage over anything since it is primarily responsible for the consequential deaths and uprisings brought about by its intervention. Ergo, the claims to justify a war against Iran is not only indefinite, but also abstract. As proof to this, majority of the US Congress is already asserting debates over Trump's clumsy and self-righteous declaration of war against Iran. It is impossible for Trump to pursue a legally-defined and morally-justified war against Iran.
Sans the unanimous approval of the US Congress, Trump resorts to his absolute right to declare war as the sole power that governs over US government. He totally ignores calls for debates and limits the discussion to his most favorable and allied entities. But he needs to begin realizing that his support and allied groups are ridiculously small and getting even fewer after the dangerous stunt he just pulled.
What WWIII means (for Trump)
Ultimately, the war was never about peace. It's not even about a condemnation against violence. Heck, it's not even about American patriotism. It's all about Trump increasing his marquee value as a president.
Trump is conscious that his primary interest is to free himself from the threat of impeachment. The US-Iran war places him in such a pedestal of importance that he already expects courtrooms to focus on what will seem to be practical and force them to tone down the political discourse into one that is pragmatically favorable.
